In the world of home care franchising, there is perhaps no greater validation of a business model than having a medical professional choose to invest in it.
When a practicing GP witnesses the gaps in the social care system at first hand and decides to be part of the solution, it speaks volumes about the quality, integrity, and potential of the business they choose to partner with.
After spending eight years working within the NHS in Scotland, Dr Martins Ihediwa has a unique vantage point on the home care crisis.
His journey from identifying a critical need in his community to becoming a Blossom Home Care franchisee covering the region of Glasgow and Ayrshire offers invaluable insights for anyone considering entering the home care sector.
Diagnosing his community’s home care problem
For many prospective franchisees, the drive to open a home care business comes from a desire to build a profitable asset.
But for Dr Martins, the motivation was deeply personal and born out of professional frustration with the status quo.
“I had many patients who, as part of our consultations, explained how carers were not showing up for their care calls. If they did, the carers were not adequate with short visit times. This was a recurring theme for a number of years.”
Living in Ayrshire with his wife and two children, Dr Martins continued his work as a GP while an idea to be part of the home care solution began to form. He describes it as “an itch” that eventually just had to be scratched.
Dr Martins saw the direct impact of poor care delivery – missed visits and rushed appointments – on vulnerable people and felt a responsibility to intervene.
“I felt I could do something about this,” he recalls. “But I wasn’t aware of how to go about doing it.”
Searching for the right franchise opportunity
The decision for anyone to buy a franchise is never impulsive; it requires lengthy due diligence, financial assessment, and a meeting of minds between the franchisee and the franchisor.
“Opening a home care business has been something in my mind since 2022,” he explains.
“It was a case of playing around with the idea, doing a bit of research, then focusing on my work, then putting it back to the top of my agenda again.”
By the middle of 2024, Dr Martins decided to take the plunge seriously – and spent months doing background research, including with the Care Inspectorate (the Scottish equivalent of the CQC), the financial implications, and the various franchise opportunities available.
“I spoke to three or four other franchises. They all had their unique selling points, but I did not get a sense of being appreciated – it felt like I was just a phone call they had to fulfil on the day.”
That changed when he spoke to Blossom.
Why Blossom stood out
In an increasingly busy sector, Blossom differentiated itself not just through our proven business model, but through its culture and leadership.
For Dr Martins, the accessibility of co-founder John Leggott was a decisive factor.
“The fact John is still doing the same thing I’m trying to do was one of the key factors,” Dr Martins notes, referring to the fact that John still delivers home care in his local area through two Blossom offices.
“So he wasn’t just running a business, he actually was involved in providing care in his own local area as well.”
Transparency was also vital for Dr Martins, with the franchise and business structure laid out clearly during face-to-face meetings.
“He was completely open and honest about what was involved, including about the financials, what our shared responsibilities would be, and the service and support I would be given to make the business a success.”
This honesty fostered a deep sense of trust and gave Dr Martins the confidence to progress through the stages of opening his own franchise.
World-class training and ongoing support
One of the primary fears for any new franchisee, especially one transitioning from a clinical background like medicine, is the operational complexity of running a business.
Entering the care sector requires rigorous adherence to regulations and standards. Blossom’s onboarding process is designed to equip franchisees with everything they need to remain compliant and confident.
Our extensive training and support systems eliminated that anxiety completely for Dr Martins.
Dr Martins underwent an intense eight-day onboarding programme, including informative training sessions led by dedicated experts in areas such as finance, CQC/Care Inspectorate, and assessments.
“All I had to do was make myself available for the training days. It was like a cookie cutter system ensuring I could learn everything I needed to know, whilst making best use of my time.
“For someone coming into this line of business with no previous experience, it was very, very straightforward,” he explains.
However, the support doesn’t end after training finishes or the business launches.
“There’s a difference between learning and putting it into practice,” he observes. “Whenever questions arise during the practical application of running the business, the franchise support team is always available to help answer the question and show me what I need to do.
This systematic approach extended to every aspect of the launch, including the often-challenging area of staff recruitment.
“I’ve not had to worry about recruitment,” Dr Martins says. “I spoke to the franchise manager who was a great help and in no time at all we had recruitment adverts up and running.”
For a busy GP, this level of support was invaluable: “I wasn’t having to spend time chasing up suppliers or people – it was all there for me to plug into and get the knowledge I needed to be able to do this successfully.”
“The ongoing support all the way through to date has been critical.”
Revolutionising home care with AI
As a GP, Dr Martins understands more than anyone the importance of accurate, efficient documentation – and the cost of getting it wrong.
That’s why he speaks so enthusiastically about Blossom’s cutting-edge AI system, which has been rolled out across the franchise network.
“On the first client assessment we did using the AI, I didn’t have to write or type – I could just have a conversation. Within 45 minutes, we were done – it was a lot more straightforward than manual notetaking.”
Utilising AI revolutionised the paperwork that followed, too.
“It took about two hours to write the care plan using the AI tools, compared to six hours before. My Registered Manager calls it a time-saving lifesaver!”
Five-star reviews and big plans for the future
Though still in the early stages of growth, Dr Martins has already begun building a strong base of clients and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
“We’ve already had a couple of five-star reviews and great testimonials, so it’s good to know that what we’re doing is being appreciated by our clients.”
But there are no plans to remain small, with ambitious growth targets already set.
“By the end of our first year I want to hit 1,000 care hours per week, which is the benchmark. But ultimately I want to get to 6,000 care hours per week over the next three to four years.
His advice to aspiring franchisees
For those considering following in his footsteps, Dr Martins offers a clear message: the need for home care is urgent, and the opportunity is vast.
“The market is big enough to take as many as be willing to come into it simply because we have an ageing population and people are only going to live longer,” he asserts.
“In my territory now we have patients in hospitals who have bed blocking for long periods of time. And the reason for the bed blocking is simply because there are no care packages available in the community.”
He sees private home care franchises not just as businesses, but as essential partners to the NHS.
“If we can get more people who are willing to take on the responsibility to provide care in their communities, we could actually help ease the pressure on the NHS.
“I don’t have any regrets signing up with Blossom and I’m hoping that the relationship will last forever.”
